I think this is because I havent figured out the command to add a new local player. Controller support is available and there are split screen cvars on the list but I cant seem to get them to work. Most of the good games you will find are paid.
There are not many coop games that are both good and free.

Portal 1 & 2 are good games to make you to get used to the general controls of kb+m., plus its mostly a puzzle game which will help to improve spatial awareness and analytical skills. I would suggest playing Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop since it has more content than Alien Swarm. It will be difficult at first to keep of track of things while trying to control and manage things like but keep practicing/playing and take your time. There is almost no downsides to kb+m when compared to controller. Since you are new I would suggest to stick with only one input type(keyboard+mouse or controller).
